Should we re-record?! Empty
PostSubject: Should we re-record?!   Should we re-record?! EmptyAugust 9th 2010, 1:57 am

Hey since we switched from the Boss and Digi distortion pedals to the Electro-Harmonix, shouldn't we re-record the guitar tracks that we laid down with original pedals? I wouldn't say that we have a defined signature sound, I think that is something that will be developed within this recording process but I do think that the Electro pedals sound a hell of a lot better than the Boss and Digi. I also want to avoid having different distortion tones on each song ya know?

If those issues bother you guys then yes you should, but we can do a compare and contrast to see what the actual difference is, and then make a decision.

PostSubject: can the shitboxes, upgrade!   Should we re-record?! EmptyAugust 10th 2010, 3:35 am

Hey guys, just a note to consider:
I've owned several $100+ stompboxes and distortion units. I bought a Zoom G9.2tt preamp/recording processor, and I will never ever look at another unit again. This board can get placed right next to any high end amp: I used a Diezel Einstein 50w head on our record and it sounded good, but this unit direct to board sounds at least 20x better and more powerful. It wipes the floor with any Mesa or Orange or Peavey I've ever owned/heard. It houses 2 12Ax7 tubes and has exact replication for just about any amp on the planet (with the Engl Powerball being the best sounding model IMHO). When you couple it with a good tube power amp section, it's friggin unstoppable. If you guys do decide to re-record and want to check it out, I'd be happy to let you use it if you look into it and like it's tones.

side note: If you're going to record micing a cabinet, try running multiple lines: mic 2 speakers (one on axis and one off with 2 different mics - watch your phase though!) and throw a 3rd mic about 2 feet behind the cab pointed at the middle of it - again, watch the phase, you may have to reverse it. A whole new tone jumps out of the monitors when you play it back. Wink

Too rich for my blood... lol Thanks for the offer man, I'd def like to tinker with it. Honestly I've been a fancy pedal board hater for a while but I never played with a G9 before. Smile

I would re-record, but I would also put the crappy distortion on all of them too. I find that to get a thick, heavy guitar sound it works much better to mix different guitar sounds together, instead of just having multiples of the same sound. I would put your "good" sound higher in the mix, and then bring up the "bad" sound under that. you may even want to low-pass the "bad" sound so its adding weight to the combined sound and not so much high-end detail.
